The Studio Dog

You won’t find this fact is many music business books, but one of the most valuable features of the well-equipped project studio is the studio dog.
SCM Studio comes equipped with one named Buddy Rodgers. Yes, the dog has a last name. It couldn’t be the same as mine; after all, she’s not a blood relation. So her last name is Rodgers. We acquired her at a flea market (where else?) back in 1997. She’s a lab mix, but we’re not quite sure what the lab is mixed with. She just looks like an undersized lab, so her full official title is: Buddy Rodgers the Microlab ™, the official studio dog of SCM Studio.
If you check out http://www.solocreativemedia.com, you’ll see that Buddy is our logo. You can’t visit us without seeing her (unless you’re allergic to dogs, and then we’ll have her stay outside, which she does without complaint.)
So what does a studio dog do? (Dog do! Get it?) Here is a quick list of her responsibilities:
1. Enthusiastically greet all musicians when they arrive.
2. Guard the entrance to the studio (but let anyone in who looks friendly).
3. Periodically come up to all guests and wait to be petted. Buddy knows that petting a studio dog automatically lowers blood pressure and reduces stress, resulting in better musical performances.
4. Occasional backing vocals (but only when requested, or if it gets too close to dinner time).
My daughter gave Buddy her first name. She learned that the first Seeing Eye dog was a female named Buddy. As for her last name, I have two explanations, which I use depending on how I feel at the moment:
1. Her last name is a tribute to the character of Sally Rogers (from the Dick Van Dyke show), who of course, worked with Buddy Sorrell.
2. She’s named after a musician who was once married to silent screen start Mary Pickford, back in the 1920’s.
There was a also a wrestler from the 1950’s called Buddy Rodgers, but who in their right mind would name a dog after a wrestler?
Buddy Rodgers is no relation to Ginger.
So there you have it, a quick bio of the famous studio dog, Buddy Rodgers. You can email her at buddy@solocreativemedia.com. What? Didn’t you know that any good studio dog would have her own email address?
